Korskærparken og Sønderparken

Goodbye to the ghetto list

The master plan for Sønderparken and Korskærparken in Fredericia is a project where the existing residential areas are not only renovated and refurbished but also further developed into modern and up-to-date districts. The result is that Sønderparken can wave goodbye to a sad placement on the “ghetto list” in the wake of the comprehensive architectural transformation.

The project indicates a strategy for how areas can be improved into sustainable neighbourhoods for all, through a democratic process involving the residents. The outdoor spaces in the two areas are transformed and re-energised with activities that create a living community.

“The work we perform involves confronting many years’ inadequate renovation. The primary focus has previously been on facades that looked better than the old ones. The process didn’t change the conditions in the troubled areas. Our work has more to it than just refreshing old facades”, says project manager Esben Trier from LINK Arkitektur.

The green and the urban

The area plans are put into use in completely new ways, for instance by offering plots that the residents can use. Two new streets – Bygaden and Grønnegaden – have been created in Sønderparken, giving the residents and visitors both green and urban experiences in the area.

First place

The transformation has been awarded first place in an architecture competition and – among other things – the judge’s opinion states: “With simple and effective measures, the two master plans create diversity and a new identity for the two areas. The master plans seem robust and can tolerate adjustment later in the process. This is an ambitious project with many good ideas, architectonic character and coherency.”
