Skärholmens library

Designing for Children's Reading Enthusiasm and Imagination

The library is an important space for community, learning, and creativity. Southwest of Stockholm, we find Skärholmen Library, where our client needed help to renovate and redesign the new district library. The goal has been to create a harmonious and functional space for play and learning.

The design of the children's section was created according to the wishes of the children, providing room for both play and imagination. When you enter the children's section, you "climb the mountain and sneak under the mushroom." The children's area among the books creates space for both activity and tranquility.

It has been important to create a harmonious design that balances classic library aesthetics with modern elements. The chosen color scheme complements the building's architecture and creates an inviting atmosphere. The palette ranges from soft green floors to reddish-brown shelves and more dreamy coral pink shades.

Old furniture given new life

The renovation involved restructuring the library with a smaller room on the ground floor and the main activity area located on the second floor in a large shopping center. Reuse has been a central part of the work, and following guidelines from the Cultural Administration, we repurposed existing furniture and fixtures for new and functional use. In this way, we contribute to minimizing environmental impact.
