Ransbergs skola

A modern city school inspired by the forest

Beautifully situated between lake and forest lies Ransberg with almost two thousand inhabitants. In the middle of nature, you will find the village's new primary school where the learning environment draws references to the forest and the myth of Rane the Giant.

The mythical giant Rane is well known in the area and takes place in the design, here integrated into the facade of the sports hall.

The facade is painted with oxide green mud paint which allows the material to stand out and retain its natural properties. The oxide green color makes the school almost blends in the landscape, but is clear enough to stand out against the coniferous forest in the background.

Investing in schools is absolutely crucial for the development and growth of smaller towns, so it feels extra nice to be able to add architectural quality right here. It has also been very rewarding to work together with both students and staff

Plenty of daylight and beautiful views

The school has been designed to make the best use of the site. The students' entrances face the school yard and the adjacent pine forest, which is used as both a play and learning environment. All classrooms have large windows with a view of the forest or the lake. Both the light and sound environment have been taken care of to create the best possible conditions for learning. The school consists of two dormitories with basic rooms, group rooms and common squares.

In the main entrance is the heart of the school, a large staircase that links the entrance with the school's library. The staircase is inviting and designed to be used for gatherings and other activities. In addition to classrooms and common areas, so-called makerspaces are also added, with space for exploratory creativity, art and music.

Local connection through playful design

In Ransberg, most residents are familiar with the story of the giant Rane, which the architects have taken note of. In collaboration with the school's students, we have allowed the mythical giant to take place in the design. Rane's jewelry hangs from the ceiling in the entrance hall and the giant himself is integrated into the facade of the sports hall. The connection to the region's own history is a way of creating identity and ownership. In addition, the sports hall and the school restaurant are available for associations and as meeting rooms on evenings, weekends and holidays, which provides added value to society at large.

Ransberg's new school is a modern rural school on two levels, with a school restaurant and a sports hall. The design meets the expression of the classic village school, while at the same time giving it a modern touch. Materials and colours, both inside and outside, harmonize with the beautiful nature where the school is located between forest and lake.
