Natrium

New Synergies in a Cohesive Campus

Natrium, a 32,000 square meter building on Medicinareberget, gathers 3,000 students and 600 employees at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Gothenburg. LINK Arkitektur is responsible for interior architecture that is both technically advanced, flexible and aesthetically pleasing.

Sweden aims to become one of the best countries in the world in SciLife and that is exactly what Natrium is about. Students and researchers in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, marine science, environmental science, geoscience and cultural conservation gather here. This billion-dollar investment will strengthen the connection between the Faculty of Science and Sahlgrenska Academy.

In a large and complex project, which continues for many years, cooperation and trust are absolutely crucial. I am very happy with how the work with Natrium has progressed. The interior architects at LINK Arkitektur have had an important role in the programme, both in identifying and formulating the businesses' needs and in following them throughout the process. The collaboration has worked very well

Sustainable environments that grow with the operations

In the long term, sustainability is about creating the conditions for change, and at Natrium, flexibility has really permeated the entire project. Some premises are shared, and the operations can grow and shrink over time due to high flexibility. The interiors take their point of departure in this. The design is throughout the house, so that furniture can be moved and simple conversions can be carried out without affecting the whole. It is also easy to supplement with new furniture thanks to a certain variety that paves the way for this right from the start. And the flexible concept has already gained recognition. In fact, during the course of the project, the assignment was expanded from three to five institutions, which entailed a revision of the project.

A whole lot of the furnishings that were in the university's existing furniture stock have been given new life in Natrium. All newly produced elements have had high sustainability ambitions and were chosen based on high demands on both quality, possibility of reconditioning, reuse etc.
